The short version. Early-stage hiring is high-stakes and fast. At Seed to Series B, a wrong hire is expensive and a great one changes the trajectory, and most founders do not have a recruiting team yet. The firms that serve startups split into a few camps: go-to-market and leadership specialists, technical and embedded recruiters, niche-sector specialists, and boutiques with simpler pricing options. This guide sorts them by the hiring situations each appears best suited to.

Match the model to the role and stage
"Startup recruiter" covers very different purchases, and picking the wrong one wastes money. Retained search fits a leadership hire you cannot get wrong. Contingent fits a single role you pay for only on success. Embedded fits sustained, multi-role hiring where a recruiter works as part of your team. Flat-fee fits a single role where you want budget certainty. Decide which the role and stage call for, then compare firms inside that model.
How to choose a startup recruiting firm
A recognizable logo matters less than whether the firm fits the role, stage, and amount of hiring you actually have. Ask each finalist the same five questions:
- Relevant proof: Which roles like ours have you filled for Seed to Series B companies in the last 12 months?
- Day-to-day ownership: Who will run our search, who reviews the work, and how many other searches will that person carry?
- Total cost: What is the fee, commitment, guarantee, and every condition that could change the price?
- Working rhythm: What do you need from our founders or hiring managers each week, and how quickly will you recalibrate after feedback?
- Candidate ownership: Who keeps the candidate pipeline and search history when the engagement ends?

Boutique, senior-led with flat-fee options
BizFirst
A boutique recruiting firm that runs senior-led searches, with a senior Client Delivery Lead who carries only three or four clients owning each engagement and reviewing every submission. For early-stage budgets it offers HireSelect, a flat $3,500 single-role search, and a part-time shared recruiter from $5,000 a month, alongside its embedded PartnerHire model. BizFirst publishes pricing across its models: DirectHire is contingent at 10% to 15% of first-year salary, HireSelect is flat-fee, and PartnerHire is priced monthly plus a flat placement fee. Company-reported: first candidates in about three business days and 94% of placements still in seat past 90 days. For an example of scaling a fast-growing team, see the Silicon Valley tech case study.
Best fit: technical and professional hiring where a startup wants senior oversight and published pay-per-hire, flat-fee, or monthly options. Confirm: fit if you need a retained VC-backed C-suite specialist, global delivery, or very high-volume hiring.
What we looked at
This is an editorial shortlist, not a scored ranking. We reviewed current public information and grouped firms by what decides an early-stage hiring decision: the roles and functions each firm emphasizes, the engagement model (retained, contingent, embedded, or flat-fee), apparent fit for Seed-to-Series-B hiring, who owns the search, and pricing transparency. Public information cannot show the quality of the individual recruiter assigned to a future engagement, so buyers should verify that directly. Metrics labeled company-reported are the firm's own claims, not independently audited.
