BizFirst publishes this guide and is one of the firms in it. We compare it on the same terms as everyone else and state where it is not the right fit. Company-reported figures are labeled. See our methodology.

The short version. AI and machine learning, data science and engineering, cybersecurity, and cloud and DevOps are four separate talent markets, and firms serve them with different models: retained executive search, contingency, contract staffing, and embedded recruiting. Those models are not interchangeable, so we do not rank them against each other. Instead we group firms by the path you are hiring for and tell you the model each uses, so you can shortlist by your actual need.

Contents

Pick your path

AI, ML, and data

A dedicated data and AI recruiter with more than a decade working solely in the sector, headquartered in the UK with US offices in New York, San Francisco, and Phoenix. Its practice spans data science, machine learning and AI, data engineering, analytics, and data governance, and it publishes an annual data and AI salary guide.

Strengths: long-standing, genuine specialization with consultants who work narrow verticals. Limitation: cybersecurity appears only through data security and governance, not a standalone practice, so it is not the pick for SOC, GRC, or offensive-security hiring.

Burtch Works (specialist; executive and retained search, contract)

A data science, analytics, and quantitative specialist that also covers AI and machine learning, MLOps, and data engineering, with lighter coverage of cloud and cybersecurity. It publishes an annual AI and data science compensation report and was recognized as the number 8 fastest-growing US staffing firm by SIA in 2025. We could not confirm a parent company, so treat it as independent.

Strengths: deep in data science, analytics, and quant, with a senior and executive search tier. Limitation: cyber and cloud are secondary to the data-science core, so a company hiring primarily for those will find deeper benches elsewhere.

A technology recruiter covering software, data and analytics, machine learning and AI, DevOps and infrastructure, and product, with an embedded model where recruiters work as part of the client team. It markets access to a highly selective talent pool (it cites the top 2% of tech and go-to-market talent) and a short submission-to-hire timeline (company-reported).

Strengths: strong across software, data, and ML, with an embedded option that suits scaling teams. Limitation: not positioned as a cybersecurity specialist, and boutique scale may not suit very high-volume nationwide contract programs.

Cybersecurity

CyberSN (specialist; direct hire, contract, platform)

A cybersecurity-only firm built around a standardized job taxonomy of 51 roles across 10 categories, aligned to the NIST NICE framework, which it uses to scope and match roles precisely. Coverage spans application security, cloud security, digital forensics and incident response, GRC, identity, network security, and security leadership. It reports filling cyber roles in 45 days or less (company-reported) and runs a cybersecurity jobs and matching platform.

Strengths: pure cybersecurity focus with an unusually rigorous way of defining roles, which reduces mis-scoped searches. Limitation: cyber only. It is not a fit for data scientists, ML engineers, or general software and cloud roles outside security.

Cloud and DevOps

Understanding Recruitment / Acceler8 Talent (permanent and contract)

An employee-owned UK technology specialist (60% owned via an Employee Ownership Trust since 2023), organized by discipline verticals including machine learning and AI and a DevOps, cloud, and SRE practice. Its US operation runs as a distinct brand, Acceler8 Talent, based in Boston and focused on AI and machine learning, semiconductors, and quantum.

Strengths: deep in software engineering, ML and AI, and DevOps and cloud, with a vertical-specialist model. Limitation: UK-rooted, with US coverage delivered through Acceler8 that is younger than US-native boutiques, and it is not a cybersecurity specialist.

Technology leadership (retained)

A retained search firm focused on technology leadership from director to C-level, including CTO, CISO, and VP Engineering roles across software, product, AI and machine learning, data, and cybersecurity. It reports more than 1,800 clients and a roughly 60% repeat-client rate (company-reported).

Strengths: built specifically for hard, senior leadership searches, with a headhunting model aimed at passive executives across exactly the domains in this guide. Limitation: retained search for leadership. It is not a fit for individual-contributor, contract, or high-volume hiring.

Broad technical staffing at scale

Motion Recruitment (contract, direct, executive search; RPO via a sister company)

A North American tech staffing firm organized into specialized recruitment teams by technology niche, including dedicated data (DataOps) and cybersecurity teams, across 22 North American offices. It offers contract, contract-to-hire, direct hire, and executive search; RPO and MSP are delivered by Sevenstep, a sister company under the shared parent Motion Recruitment Partners.

Strengths: coverage across all four domains with recruiters organized by niche, plus contract and direct-hire flexibility. Limitation: an agency model, so buyers who specifically want a single-domain boutique or purely retained search may prefer a specialist.

TEKsystems (staff augmentation, managed services)

A subsidiary of Allegis Group covering all four domains at enterprise scale, with named practices in cloud and data modernization, data analytics, AI and machine learning, and cybersecurity (company-reported scale figures).

Strengths: scale and a services orientation that fit large enterprises and high-volume contract needs across every domain here. Limitation: broad and enterprise-geared, so smaller employers wanting a boutique’s hands-on, single-domain attention may find it too general.

Insight Global (contract, direct, RPO, managed services)

A large national staffing firm with a broad IT practice that includes named AI, data, and cloud services and a dedicated cybersecurity recruiting practice, alongside many other verticals.

Strengths: a deep bench and national reach for scaling contract technical teams quickly and broadly. Limitation: a high-volume generalist, so for niche senior AI and ML roles or specialized cyber searches, a specialist is a better fit.

Cleared technical hiring: where BizFirst fits

BizFirst is a Northern Virginia firm focused on senior-led recruiting for AI, data, and technical roles, including cleared work across Public Trust through TS/SCI and full-scope polygraph, which most technical boutiques do not touch. On the AI side it recruits ML engineers, MLOps and AI platform engineers, applied and research scientists, data engineers, and AI product and architecture roles. A senior Client Delivery Lead owns alignment, oversight, and quality and reviews every submission before it reaches you, while experienced recruiters matched to the role handle sourcing and screening; the Delivery Lead carries three to four clients so the same person who learns your stack is the one reviewing candidates.

For proof, see the SitScape case study: a two-year DirectHire engagement placing AI and ML technical consultants for an AI-driven enterprise platform, with 96% candidate retention (company-reported).

Pricing is published, and it is worth being precise: PartnerHire (embedded) is a flat monthly fee per dedicated recruiter plus $1,000 per placement, never a percentage of salary, while DirectHire (contingent) is 10 to 15% of salary with a 90-day replacement guarantee. BizFirst reports 94% of placements still in seat past 90 days (company-reported).

Limitation, plainly: BizFirst is a boutique. It is not built for high-volume nationwide technical benches, and a cyber-only or frontier-ML specialist will go deeper in that single niche. For those, the specialists and enterprise firms above fit better.

What we looked at

We did not calculate scores. We grouped and described firms using the factors that decide this buyer’s problem: genuine technical depth in the specific domain, how the firm scopes and screens technical candidates, ability to reach passive candidates, who actually works the search, speed to first qualified candidates, the engagement model, and evidence of results weighted by how verifiable it is. To be included, a firm had to sell recruiting services and show a real, stated specialization in one or more of these four domains, verifiable from its own site. We do not measure any individual recruiter, any specific search, or fees we cannot verify.

FAQs

Is a specialist always better than a generalist here?
For hard, senior, or niche roles, usually, because a specialist recruiter can actually talk to candidates about the work. For high-volume or broad hiring, an enterprise firm's bench and speed can win.
How do I tell real technical depth from marketing?
Ask the recruiter to explain the role back to you and listen for whether they understand it. Ask how they screen, who does the sourcing, and for a reference on the same kind of role. Depth shows up fast in a real conversation.
Retained, contingency, contract, or embedded, which do I need?
Retained for hard senior leadership, contingency for direct hires you pay for on success, contract for flexible capacity, and embedded when you want a recruiter operating as part of your team for a stretch. Match the model to the need before comparing firms.
What about the metrics firms publish?
Treat them as claims. Ask for the definition, period, and sample behind any number that matters, and weight it accordingly.

If you are hiring for AI, data, or technical roles, cleared or commercial, and want a senior lead to own the search, see our AI and technical recruiting approach and published pricing. If a specialist above fits your exact niche better, use this guide to choose it.
